The main focus of your well woman exam is to make sure your reproductive health is nothing less of pristine, so you have no problems down the line. If you have never had a well woman exam, it may make you a bit nervous not knowing what will happen. We can break down the well woman exam for you, so you feel informed and ready.
There are three main parts of the exam: breast exam, pelvic exam, and a Pap smear.
Breast Exam:
A breast exam is performed to generally screen for any abnormalities in your breasts. Your doctor will most likely look for any hard nodules, lumps, or changes in the skin texture/color. They will palpate your breast tissue in a specific pattern to observe these changes.
The exam itself take less than 5-10 minutes itself. This is a crucial step to help detect for the women-majority cancer, breast cancer.
Pelvic Exam:
A pelvic exam is used to observe abnormalities in the pelvic region, including the vulva, vagina, and surrounding areas. Things that will be observed, for example, are warts, discoloration, abnormal discharge, or bleeding.
Pap Smear:
A Pap smear consists of your doctor gathering cells from your cervix to screen for cervical cancer or dysplasia, which could indicate cancer is likely to occur in the future. Your healthcare professional will help open your vaginal canal with an instrument called a speculum. This allows for easy access to your cervix to be swabbed.
